Dear Parents and Caregivers,

To promote health and safety for young people in our community, and in accordance with Washington State Law, we offer sexual health education at Columbia High School. Students in grades 10,11, and 12 get one lesson annually on HIV prevention, and one on communicating effectively with peers and partners. Students enrolled in our Health course receive a more comprehensive, two week program. The curriculum we use (FLASH) provides medically accurate, age-appropriate information about sexual health and healthy relationships. You may review the curriculum at this link - https://tinyurl.com/CHSSexEdPreview

This program recognizes parents and caregivers as the primary sexuality educators of their children. The program includes assignments that help parents and other trusted caregivers discuss sex and sexuality, and share their own values about these important topics with their children.  Positive communication between parents and teens helps establish family and individual values enabling young people to make healthier, safer decisions related to sexuality.

You are welcome to preview the curriculum and ask any questions you may have.  I am hosting a preview and discussion night on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.  You may attend in-person in the library at Columbia High School or by zoom ( join at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87919669811  or dial in by phone +1 253 215 8782  Meeting ID: 879 1966 9811)

If you are unable to attend, but wish to discuss the curriculum, feel free to call or email me so we can arrange a time to meet and address any questions you may have about the program.

If you DO NOT want your son or daughter to participate in the sexual health education program, please complete the form at the end of this letter; our teaching staff will arrange a different learning activity for your student.
