Greetings CHS Families!

I hope everyone has had a safe and enjoyable summer break. We are starting this school year off with distance learning. Many of our staff members have been working through the summer to provide our students with a quality distance learning program. Students will start school on Wednesday, August 26. I have provided the information below that will help prepare your student for the upcoming school year.

Trimester Schedule - We will again be on a three-trimester schedule. The students will complete five classes each trimester, but they will be focusing on three classes at a time. The students will have four six week condensed courses and one twelve-week course. The first six weeks of the year the will be attending Period 1 (6-week course), Period 2 (6-week course), and Period 5/Advisory (12-week course). The second six weeks of the trimester students will be attending Period 3 (6-week course), Period 4 (6-week course), and Period 5/Advisory. (Sample student schedule English) (Sample Student Schedule Spanish)

First Three Days of School - Students will have a one-hour live zoom session with their advisor during the first three days of school. They will also be given approximately two hours of self-directed learning each day. The focus of this time will be on using the technology they will need to be successful with their distance learning courses and social and emotional learning. Our liaisons should have contacted each family to set a conference for Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of the first week of school.

New Staff - We have three new CHS staff members this year. We are happy to have Del Medenbach back on the CHS staff. You may remember Del from two years ago when he taught metal shop at Columbia high school. He is now teaching wood shop classes. Adriana Clayton will be our librarian. We are excited to have Adriana as part of our team. You may have seen her around the high school in her role as the head girl’s soccer coach or as the junior varsity boy’s soccer coach. Gisselle Garcia will be taking over our art classes for the first trimester of this year. If the name sounds familiar it is because Gisselle is a 2016 graduate of Columbia High School.

Skyward - Students may use Skyward Student Access, for viewing schedules, fees/fines, attendance, and grades. Visit our CHS web page at columbia.wsvsd.org for athletics, a current calendar, and much more.

Scheduling - We tried to accommodate schedule requests as best as we could, but that is not always possible. If you have a problem with your schedule, email the counselor, Mrs. Hallead. Due to the complexity of the distant learning model, schedule changes will not be allowed unless there is an extreme circumstance approved by an administrator.

Google Classroom - Students check your school Gmail for an invite to your advisor's Google Classroom. The Zoom link for your class will be in your advisor's Google Classroom.

Thank you for working with the staff at Columbia High School to help your students build positive memories as they strive to reach their goals. My door is always open, and I would love to hear from you. I’m excited to start another school year.

Sincerely,

Craig McKee
