Looking for a good project idea? Keep in mind that your project needs to meet at least TWO (2) of the following areas
Career- What kind of work are you interested in after graduation?
Academic -- What isn't offered at CHS that you could learn from someone else somewhere else?
Personal challenges - What personal weaknesses can you conquer, or at least make stronger?
Service - What problems do you see in your community that you might be able to help solve?

- Senior Project Proposal (Google Doc) is where you need to start. Before you get going on your work, get your plan approved. Share it electronically with Mr Knowles when you're done, or contact him with questions as you get going.
- Keep track of all your hours. To complete the project, you need to document at least 15 hours of work on your PROJECT (not including time spent on your paper or presentation) outside of school hours. Use this form to track your time, and make sure you have each work session verified by your mentor or responsible adult.
- Once your proposal is approved by the Senior Project Coordinator, you also need to show that your parent or guardian is on board. Get this Parent Approval Form signed and returned so you can move forward. (PDF) 1 page.

Why a Culminating Senior Project?
The White Salmon Valley School District requires that each graduate of public high schools complete a culminating project in order to:
• Encourage students to think analytically, logically, and creatively and to integrate experience and knowledge to solve problems.
• Give students a chance to explore a topic in which they have a great interest.
• Offer students an opportunity to apply their learning in a "real world" way.
• Provide students an opportunity to demonstrate essential skills through reading, writing, speaking, production and/or performance.
In addition, components of the Culminating Senior Project will require students to demonstrate their knowledge of the importance of work and how efforts and decisions affect career and educational opportunities.
CULMINATING SENIOR PROJECT COMPONENTS
|Community Service||Students will participate in 30 hours (grades 9 through 12) of authentic, meaningful civic action related to their career area and/or personal interests. Hours and service must meet qualification criteria in order to be counted. (See pages 9 & 10 for more details)||
|Research Analysis Paper||Students will write an in-depth research analysis paper, to be completed by the end of the first semester. Students will meet specific criteria and deadlines for the paper as provided by their individual English teachers. Refer to assignment guidelines provided by your senior English teacher.||Senior English
Language and Literature IV, AP English, or other senior year English class
|Project||Students will complete a challenging project of their own design through which they will gain deeper content knowledge and understanding on a relevant topic. A minimum of 15 hours of independent work must be spent and documented on this element of the senior project. A field expert or mentor is advised, but not required.||Your own time (outside of school time) with coordination and support from Senior Project Coordinator|
|Presentation||Students will create and deliver a 15 to 20-minute presentation to a panel of judges that may consist of administrators, teachers, parents, community members, or fellow students to demonstrate his or her accomplishments and growth as a learner, worker, and citizen. In keeping with the formality and importance of the event, appropriate attire is required.||Senior Presentation Week in April, with scheduling through Advisory. Practice sessions will take place during HSPE week in March.|
|Professional Development Portfolio||The senior's portfolio needs to be available for review at the student's presentation.||Advisory
Completed throughout your 4 years at CHS
|High School & Beyond Plan||Students will include a post-secondary plan in the Professional Development Portfolio. This plan should reflect a student's preparedness to be a citizen and achieve personal, career, and education goals. This is a state graduation requirement.||Senior English & Advisory
